Residents of an Oswestry neighbourhood have spoken of their shock following a fire which destroyed a house and left a family homeless.
The fire occurred on Wednesday December 15, at 11:58, on York Road, Oswestry.
A mother and her three-year-old daughter were rescued from the house, and pictures published by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service later revealed rooms inside the property in ruins.
The two victims were left unharmed.
However, one neighbour, who asked not to be named, said the fire had devastated many of hte family’s possessions, leading to an outpouring of support from the local community.
The woman and her daughter are currently being looked after and given shelter by friends and family.
One neighbour said: “It is terrible that this occurred not long before Christmas.
“It is one of many bad things to have happened in the area recently.”
However, people in the community have rallied to the support of the fire victims, gathering essentials to help them through the festive period.
Another neighbour, who also did not wish to be named, added: “People have donated a lot of clothing. My daughter donated a bag of clothes.”
The presence of many emergency vehicles was a surprise to residents with a number saying they heard sirens and saw flashing lights.
One neighbour said: “There were three fire engines, two ambulances and one or maybe two police cars. I don’t know why they needed all of them outside.”
Another added: “I saw the blue lights flashing and heard the noise. Normally it’s very quiet here.”
