MANILA, Philippines — Authorities arrested four individuals for violating the gun ban at the start of the election period on January 12, 2025.

The Commission on Elections established checkpoints beginning January 12 to maintain peace and security.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil confirmed that the arrests took place in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Central Mindanao, Western Visayas and Central Luzon.

“Four individuals were arrested in these areas for violating the gun ban,” Marbil said. “Our personnel, in coordination with Comelec, are continuing to carry out strict operations to ensure that the gun ban is fully implemented.”

Comelec Chairman George Garcia emphasized the importance of the gun ban in safeguarding the electoral process.

“The gun ban is a vital component of our efforts to maintain peace and order during the election period. We urge everyone to comply and to report any violations,” Garcia said.

The election gun ban will remain in place until the end of the election period on June 11. It prohibits the unauthorized carrying or transport of firearms and other deadly weapons. Exemptions are granted only to individuals and entities that secure special permits from the Comelec.

The arrested individuals face charges for violating the Omnibus Election Code, which imposes severe penalties on those caught breaching the gun ban. Violators may face imprisonment, disqualification from holding public office, and the revocation of firearm licenses.
