Infosys’ Mysuru campus remains under alert after a leopard was spotted on December 31, 2024. Employees have been advised to work remotely, while more than 7,000 trainees staying on campus resumed classes following a week-long search operation that involved marked campus maps and the use of goats as bait. Despite these efforts, forest officials have been unable to capture the animal.

Search operation details

The Bengaluru-based company initially issued a two-day break for trainees and extended remote work for employees. About 15 personnel from the forest department are stationed on the 350-acre campus, actively searching for the leopard using five trap cages, 25 camera traps, and thermal drones.

Deputy Conservator of Forests (Territorial) KN Basavaraj confirmed, “In the last 48 hours, there has been no evidence of the leopard—no camera trap images, pugmarks, or movement within the campus. The last sighting was recorded on January 5.”

He added that the campus’ underground tunnels and drainage pipes could be potential hideouts for the leopard. “We are systematically inspecting these areas and plugging them with mesh to prevent access,” he said.

Safety measures for trainees

In a reported internal communication, Infosys has advised trainees to adhere to specific routes marked on the campus map. Orange arrows indicate pathways from trainee lodging (ECC) to training buildings (GEC2), while yellow arrows guide them to food courts. Trainees have been instructed to move in groups of five or more, avoid loitering, and refrain from sitting on benches or footpaths.

“Kindly avoid loitering in the campus and step out of your ECC only when necessary,” the communication stated. It also urged trainees to maintain campus decorum and avoid loud noises or large gatherings.

Current developments

According to a report in Star of Mysore, 12 camera traps and two cages have been placed in areas where the leopard is most likely to appear. A drone equipped with thermal imaging is also tracking the animal’s movements. However, there have been no new traces of the leopard, leading to speculation that it may have already exited the campus.Forest officials continue their vigilance, while Infosys is expected to reassess the situation for employees after January 6.

Background on the campus

Infosys’ Mysuru campus, spread over 350 acres, houses training facilities and lodging for thousands of trainees. The incident has raised concerns about wildlife management in urbanized areas, as such sightings are becoming increasingly common across India.
